The Co-Presidency of the KCK (Kurdistan Communities Union) Executive Council published an obituary for Zeynep Cansız, mother of Sakine Cansız, who lost her life on 13 April in a hospital in İzmir province. Zeynep Cansız had been receiving treatment in the intensive care unit of Izmir City Hospital, and had been intubated on 11 April.
The KCK obituary said the following: “It is with deep sorrow that we have learned of the passing of Zeynep Cansız, the mother of comrade Sara, one of the founders of our Kurdistan freedom movement, due to serious health complications. We pray for God’s mercy upon her and extend our condolences to her family and loved ones, as well as to all our patriotic people and the people of Dersim.
Mother Zeynep witnessed the Dersim Massacre of 1937/38 and deeply experienced its pain. Like many families of Dersim, her family also paid a heavy price during the Dersim Massacre. This caused great anger within Mother Zeynep and contributed to the developing emergence of her Kurdish identity. Mother Zeynep’s influence is evident in the development of both Kurdish sentiments and anger against the massacre within the family. Her influence is also evident in comrade Sara’s intense anger against genocidal colonialism and in her resilient, freedom-striving personality. The fact that she raised a child like comrade Sara demonstrates just how unique her qualities were. We will always remember her with great gratitude. We believe that our people will approach this matter in the same way and will embrace and honor Mother Zeynep’s funeral with this awareness. Once again, we extend our condolences to our patriotic people, her family, her loved ones, and the people of Dersim.”
