Îlham Ehmed and transitional government minister discuss women’s role and the situation of detainees

Îlham Ehmed, Co-Chair of the Foreign Relations Department of the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria, met in Hesekê with Hind Qebewat, who serves as Minister of Labor and Social Affairs in the Transitional Government. Representatives of women’s organizations, women lawyers, Kongra Star, and various civil society organizations also attended the meeting.

The meeting addressed topics such as the formalization of women’s organizations, the role of women in the new government, and the situation of migrants and detainees.

To chair the meeting, a panel was formed consisting of Îlham Ehmed, international advisor Zên El Melazî from the Switzerland-based “Norff” institution, Autonomous Administration advisor Jiyan Dêrik, and civil society representative Sozan Elûş.

Speaking here, Îlham Ehmed drew attention to integration processes, emphasizing the importance of distinguishing between integration that preserves identity and integration that leads to assimilation.

“Integrating women into institutions and giving them a fundamental role in decision-making processes is an essential step that cannot be ignored. The approved mechanism envisages the nomination of three individuals from each institution—two women and one man—so that the most suitable person can be selected based on skills and qualifications,” she said.

Ehmed pointed out that this approach strengthens the presence of women and human rights defenders within institutional structures and contributes to the struggle for justice by advancing the integration process.

Ehmed also addressed the issue of detainees and criticized the ongoing obstacles to their release. Recalling previous commitments regarding the release of 300 detainees, she emphasized that this issue is a “general moral responsibility” and will continue to be raised at every meeting.
