Speaking at the gathering held at the Tahir Elçi Conference Hall of the Van Bar Association, Democratic Unity Initiative Co-Spokesperson Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit stated that Kurds have paid a heavy price throughout history for failing to achieve unity, and emphasized that if unity is achieved, this century could become the century of the Kurds.
Gülcan Kaçmaz Sayyiğit highlighted the importance of the ongoing Peace and Democratic Society Process in Turkey, stating that a joint struggle is essential for the recognition of Kurdish status, the official recognition of the Kurdish language, and the safeguarding of their rights.
“When we unite, no matter what kind of dirty plans any dominant state makes, Kurds can overcome them. For this, all Kurds must come together regardless of their views. If Kurds unite, they will achieve great gains,” she underlined.
The other co-spokesperson of the Initiative, Mehmet Kamaç, stated that the world is going through a process of reconfiguration and that the greatest need for Kurds in this period is national unity.
Kamaç said, “We are going through a historic process. Will Kurds relive the 20th century, or will they achieve the gains of the 21st century? We have no choice but to secure the opportunities that lie ahead of us in the 21st century.”
Kamaç also commented on the ongoing process, saying, “The Kurdish side has done what was necessary. Now all eyes are on the state.”
The meeting continued closed to the press.
