KCK condemns the attack on Nechirvan Barzani’s residence

Since February 28, when Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran, more than 460 drone and missile strikes have been carried out against the Kurdistan Region. These attacks have resulted in the death of 14 people and injury of 85 others. The cities of Hewlêr (Erbil) and Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq were targeted by six drone attacks on Saturday, which also targeted the residence of Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in Duhok.

The Executive Council of the Kurdistan Communities Union (KCK) strongly condemned the attack on the residence of Nechirvan Barzani in Duhok. In a statement on Sunday, the leadership of the umbrella organization of the Kurdish freedom movement expressed its full solidarity with the President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI).

The statement noted that Kurdish forces have been targeted multiple times since the beginning of the US–Israel and Iran war, and repeated attacks against the Kurdistan region have taken place, resulting in casualties and significant material damage. KCK extended their condolences to the families of those who lost their lives in these attacks and wished a speedy recovery to the injured.

KCK pointed out that:“Kurds are not involved in this war and are not a party to it. Yet, attacks against Kurds and Kurdistan continue. It is clear that these attacks aim to drag Kurds into the war. We condemn all these attacks and warn the forces responsible for them. The Kurdish people are a people who have been waging a struggle for freedom for decades under the grip of denial, annihilation, and genocide. Our people seek to resolve the issue of freedom not through war, but through dialogue and political solutions. On this basis, we call on everyone to approach the Kurds with respect. Everyone must show respect for our people’s legitimate struggle, and no one should make miscalculations.”

The statement concluded: “The war unfolding in our region and the attacks directed at Kurdistan have once again demonstrated just how necessary it is for Kurdish political forces to unite on the basis of democratic solidarity.”
