After poet Ahmed Huseyni passed away on March 10 in Stockholm, Sweden, due to cancer, his body arrived in the city of Qamishlo. Huseyni’s remains were received by his comrades in front of the building of the Union of Intellectuals of Rojava Kurdistan (HRRK) in Qamishlo.
Ahmed Huseyni’s coffin was carried out from the center accompanied by a recording of him reading his own poems. Poets, journalists, intellectuals, writers, and political friends, along with representatives of the PYD, MSD, and KNK, as well as artists and literary figures, attended. The funeral convoy then set off toward the city of Amûdê.
Ahmed Huseyini laid to rest
The funeral convoy of poet Ahmed Huseyni was received in Jina Azad Square in Amûdê by the public, his family, and friends, accompanied by the anthem “Ey Reqîb” performed by the Serdem Music Group. His body was then taken to the Salahaddin Ayyubi Mosque where funeral prayers were held.
Afterward, Ahmed Huseyni was laid to rest in the Old Cemetery in the city of Amûdê.
Condolence ceremony
The Cizîrê Culture Committee and the Joint Council of Kurdish Writers and Intellectuals in Rojava Kurdistan (DHNRK.RK) organized a memorial ceremony at the Horî Culture and Art Center in Amûdê to offer condolences.
Ahmed Huseyni’s family and friends also attended the ceremony. After a moment of silence, Abdülmecid Xelef spoke on behalf of the Mesopotamian Democratic Culture and Art Movement (TEV-ÇAND) and the Cizîrê Culture Committee, stating that the large number of people gathered for Ahmed Huseyni showed how widely he was respected. Xelef emphasized that, just as Ahmed Huseyni did, everyone should stand by the intellectuals and values of their own country.
A voice from the heart of the Kurds
Speaking on behalf of DHNRK.RK, Enahîta Sîno, Co-Chair of the Cizîrê Union of Intellectuals, said that their land is sacred enough to be a homeland for martyrs and that Ahmed Huseyni was the voice of the Kurdish people’s heart. She added:
“He has bid us farewell; he was a person full of love, and his love can never be fully described in words. He protected the Kurdish language and literature. He supported Kurdish intellectuals and youth, played a very important role in the unity of intellectuals, and finally became one of the founders of DHNRK.RK.”
“He was a derwish of his people”
Xerîb Hiso, Co-Chair of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), said that Ahmed Huseyni had made great contributions and that they would fulfill his dreams in every field. “He was an intellectual, a poet, and a patriotic figure. Throughout his life he endured much suffering and was a dervish of his people. His dream was Kurdish national unity; as intellectuals and politicians we must realize his dream,” he said.
“One of the pioneers of poetry”
Hesen Mihemed Elî, Co-Chair of the Relations Office of the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD), said that Ahmed Huseyni was one of the pioneers of poetry in Rojava. He stated that Huseyni conveyed a message of reviving civilization through poetry and initiated the journey of poetry and science. “We can gather our history through poetry. His friends will continue to carry his banner. He left us a great legacy so that we may love each other more,” he said.
“We will follow his path”
Speaking on behalf of HRRK and Huseyni’s family, Mûnir Şêxî said that Ahmed Huseyni was a loyal citizen of his people. He recalled that during the 2004 Qamishlo Massacre Huseyni helped develop the movement of Kurdish intellectuals, later founded HRRK abroad, and after the establishment of the Autonomous Administration, returned to the region and opened the HRRK center in Qamishlo.
“We will follow his path. We will expand HRRK and DHNRK.RK,” he said.
Mûnir Şêxî also noted that the Autonomous Administration’s European representation, the DEM Party, and the Amed Metropolitan Municipality made great efforts to ensure that Ahmed Huseyni’s body was brought to Rojava.
The KCK also sent a letter to HRRK and Huseyni’s family both during his illness and after his death.
