CHP Chairman Özgür Özel sent a message to the Newroz celebration in Amed and stated the following:
“To lift the burden of the dark winter from our people, who are tired of conflicts, hostility, and marginalization, the only solution now is peace.
Those who laugh while their neighbor cries, who celebrate while their brothers/sisters are under oppression and bombardment, do not possess this conscience.
Those who laugh at the tears of Kurds in Syria and rejoice in their suffering are not one of us. The Republican People’s Party stands against violence and on the side of solution and peace. Any mentality that seeks to pit Kurds and Turks against each other has no place in our view. Know this: whoever divides, polarizes, and fosters hostility among this nation for their own political interests is not with you, but stands with the tyrant Dehak.
The civilian coup carried out one year ago, on March 19, 2025, was not only directed against the CHP. It targeted the peace of this country and its multi-party democratic system. As a result of this coup, the ‘Urban Consensus’ cases, which criminalize the representation of Kurds with their own identity in municipal councils, are still ongoing, and trustee appointments continue.
The Republican People’s Party will continue to stand firmly for equality, justice, and multi-party political competition, and will never allow the Kurds’ hope of peace to be turned into a subject of political bargaining and wasted. We will live together in this country as honorable citizens in equality! This is our spring, this is our Newroz! There is no salvation alone—either all together or none of us! Happy Newroz!”
