In the mountains of Qandil, fighters of the Kurdish freedom movement lit the first Newroz fire of 2026. With this, this year’s Newroz was ushered in under the motto “Newroz of Freedom and Democracy.”
Members of the Free Women’s Troops (YJA Star) as well as the People’s Defense Forces (HPG) took part in the ceremony. Participants gathered around the fire and celebrated the occasion with dances, songs, and slogans.
The guerrillas welcomed Newroz “with great enthusiasm, determination, and in the spirit of resistance.” Around the fire, the fighters performed traditional circle dances, emphasizing their connection to the ongoing struggle for freedom. In Kurdish culture, Newroz is regarded as a symbol of renewal and the will for freedom.
