The Kurdish guerrilla band Koma Awazê Çiya released a new song along with a video clip on the occasion of the upcoming Newroz festival. The piece is titled “Newroza Azadiyê” (Newroz of Freedom) and was produced as part of this year’s Newroz celebrations, which will be held under the motto “Unity, Freedom and Democracy.”
In a statement accompanying the clip, the group congratulated the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, as well as all the martyrs of the Kurdish freedom movement, on the upcoming New Year celebration, which will be celebrated for the 2638th time this year. In this context, they also commemorated Mazlum Doğan, described as the “contemporary Kawa.” The revolutionary and PKK co-founder set three matches on fire on March 21, 1982, in Diyarbakır Prison in protest against the torture carried out by the Turkish military dictatorship and took his own life. He left behind the words: “To give up is betrayal – resistance brings victory.”
At the same time, the members of Awazê Çiya stated: “At a time when our people stand united in all parts of Kurdistan and also abroad, and when our hearts beat together, we are passing through a historic phase in terms of national consciousness. The occupation borders drawn across the geography of Kurdistan are losing their meaning day by day through the struggle for unity and freedom and are increasingly being overcome.
The 53-year struggle of Abdullah Öcalan has brought the Kurdish people to this point. It is time for the Kurdish people to take their rightful place among the peoples of the world. Kurds and Kurdistan have become an irreversible reality. With the great enthusiasm of this Newroz 2026, we salute the resistance of our people in all parts of Kurdistan and throughout the world and sincerely congratulate them on the Newroz festival.”
The group also emphasized that it wanted to contribute to this process through its music. The release of the clip “Newroza Azadiyê” is understood as an artistic gift to the Kurdish people. “In order to be at least a drop in the ocean of the work of the martyrs and of our struggling people, we want to welcome this Newroz with our art,” Awazê Çiya stated. In conclusion, the group congratulated all people whose hearts beat for freedom on the Newroz festival and wished them: “May every day be like Newroz.”
