Qîmet Nerexî, a member of the Iştar Assembly Coordination, spoke to ANF about the meaning and importance of March 8, International Working Women’s Day. She said that, as Kurdish women, they are very fortunate to have a leadership that “awakened them from the sleep of death.”
“We must be aware of ourselves”
Nerexî said that although March 8 emerged from the struggles of women in other countries, this resistance has also given strength to Kurdish women, and she continued: “When we look today, we see that Kurdish women still face oppression, violence, and massacres. However, as Kurdish women, having a leadership that awakened us from the sleep of death is a great fortune. The leadership taught us that we exist, that we have rights, and that we must protect our own existence. The paradigm put forward by the leadership gives women a pioneering role in their own development. The leadership says, ‘If women are not free, society cannot be free.’ In the latest March 8 message sent to women, it was also emphasized that a democratic and peaceful society cannot be established unless women are free. Therefore, the more we women defend ourselves and act in line with the duties and mission given by the leadership, the more we can make the 21st century the century of women and reach peace and a democratic society under women’s leadership.”
“We must read the process correctly”
Nerexî concluded her remarks with the following words: “Today the leadership especially emphasizes communal life and communal society. Because the first communities in human history were formed by women, and society took shape around women. For this reason, if women do not take the lead in the system that the leadership wants to establish, the desired results cannot be achieved. Therefore, especially as Kurdish women, we must fulfill our duties in line with the role and mission given to us by the leadership. Today, women who resist for their freedom and expand their struggle against the injustices they face must provide an answer to everyone. If today we can still live for centuries with our own language and with the culture of women and mothers and unite around it, this is thanks to the efforts of the leadership. For this reason, we must be aware of ourselves and, by correctly reading the process and understanding the role that falls to us in society, fulfill our responsibilities.”
