Salih Muslim, a member of the Co-Presidential Council of the Democratic Union Party (PYD), has passed away at the age of 75.
Salih Muslim Mohammed was born on 3 March 1951, in Kobanê, where patriotic values were strong. He completed his education in Rojava and Syria until high school. He later attended Istanbul Technical University, graduating in 1977. For a period, he went to Saudi Arabia to work. Having strong patriotic feelings, Muslim visited Abdullah Öcalan in 1983. Following the Qamishlo Massacre in 2003, he was arrested and imprisoned for seven months because of a letter he wrote to Bashar al-Assad.
After being released from prison, he joined the newly established Democratic Union Party (PYD) in 2003 and became a member of its executive council. In 2010, he was elected co-chair of the PYD. During those years, he held meetings with officials of the Turkish state to negotiate the future of Syria.
In September 2017, he served as the head of foreign relations for the Movement for a Democratic Society (TEV-DEM). During his time as PYD co-chair and in his role within TEV-DEM, he became an important actor through his work at both national and international levels.
At the 9th congress of the PYD held on March 19, 2022, he was re-elected as PYD co-chair. Two years later, at the 10th congress, he handed over the co-chair position and continued his role as a member of the PYD Co-Chair Council.
Salih Muslim died on March 11, 2026, in Erbil, where he had been receiving treatment for kidney failure.
