Women lit Newroz fire on the walls of Amed

The enthusiasm for Newroz, which will be celebrated this year with the slogans “Newroz of Freedom and Democratic Unity” and “Newroz of Freedom and Democracy,” has spread everywhere. In this context, the Newroz fire was lit under the leadership of women at the Ben û Sen Bastion in the Sur district of Amed. Many citizens, as well as representatives of civil society organizations and political parties, attended the Newroz event, where women participated wearing traditional clothing.

Hundreds of people gathered in front of Ben û Sen and formed traditional halay dances accompanied by music. During the dances, the slogan “Long live Leader Apo” was chanted. Artists from the Dicle Fırat Cultural Center also organized a march up to the bastions accompanied by erbane drums. Women took the lit torches and climbed onto the bastions with the sound of the erbane, creating colorful scenes on the city walls.

Citizens accompanied the erbane drums played on the walls by singing songs. During the celebration, where fireworks were also set off and traditional drum and zurna music was played, hundreds of people dancing halay below chanted the slogans “Long live Leader Apo” and “Woman, Life, Freedom.”

The event continued with halay dances around the Newroz fire lit in front of the bastions.

Speaking there, Hatice Şahin from TJA congratulated everyone on Newroz, especially Leader Apo. Hatice Şahin said: “Sur is the place of resistance fighters, the place of those who struggle, the place where the struggle is raised. Sur is the place of Zekiye Alkan, who set her body on fire and strengthened the Newroz flame. We will turn our struggle into a circle of fire; we will form the halay of the peoples. Once again we say here: we will not stop our struggle until the process initiated by the Kurdish People’s Leader Mr. Öcalan succeeds, and until the physical freedom of the Kurdish People’s Leader is ensured. Until success is achieved, we will continue marching toward freedom.”
