Female guerrillas prepare for March 8 in the mountains of Kurdistan

Guerilla fighters of the Free Women’s Troops (YJA Star) are preparing for International Women’s Day in the mountains of Kurdistan through various activities. Speaking to ANF, female guerrillas shared their expectations for this year’s March 8 and emphasized the significance of the day for the struggle for women’s liberation.

Guerrilla fighter Gulan Çiya stated that the preparations are also an expression of the historical continuity of the women’s struggle. According to her, the fighters draw the strength to continue this path from the ideas of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan. “With the strength of Abdullah Öcalan’s ideas and philosophy, we were able to reach this point. Our preparations for March 8 also draw their strength from this. The aim of the activities is to make the role of women’s work and the progress of the women’s revolution visible,” she said.

From Rosa Luxemburg to Sakine Cansız

Gulan Çiya also recalled earlier generations of women fighters. “From Rosa Luxemburg to Sakine Sara Cansız and up to the present day, we want to keep the memory of revolutionary women alive,” she said. Regarding the struggle for women’s liberation, the fighter expressed an ambitious goal: “Our belief is that this year will be a year of victory for women and for the women’s revolution. However, this is only possible if all women stand together.”

“2026 will be a year of victory for free women”

Guerrilla fighters Aljîn Şahîn and Viyan Lewend also expressed their anticipation for March 8. They explained that the preparations are being carried out with great motivation. The fighters particularly emphasized the moral significance of the messages and images of Abdullah Öcalan. “Seeing Öcalan this year and receiving his greetings has given us great moral strength,” they said. With this motivation, they intend to prepare the planned events.

“The activities we are preparing will be an important message to women all over the world,” they added. At the same time, they emphasized their determination to continue the struggle against patriarchal violence and oppression. “With this moral strength, we will continue our struggle to overcome the attacking mentality,” the fighters said.

Call for women’s unity

Guerrilla fighter Evîn Goyî also stated that the preparations for March 8 are continuing with great enthusiasm. “The aim is to reach women worldwide and give them courage. The events we organize and our unity will be an important source of strength for women who are oppressed by the system and exposed to patriarchal violence,” she said. Women’s voices, she added, can only become stronger through organization and collective struggle. In conclusion, Goyî congratulated all women around the world on March 8 and said: “We celebrate this day in the name of Abdullah Öcalan, our fallen comrades, and all the women of the world.”
