SDF begins withdrawal from Şêxler in accordance with January Agreement

The Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have begun a gradual withdrawal from the town center of the municipality of Şêxler near Kobanê. The pullout is taking place within the framework of the ceasefire and integration agreement concluded on January 29 with the transitional government in Damascus.

According to security sources, the withdrawal is being carried out in stages. The SDF are relocating their units from the town center to their previous bases outside the town. The positions vacated in the center of Şêxler will henceforth be taken over by the Internal Security Forces (Asayish).

The objective of the measure is to implement the security coordination agreed upon in the accord while at the same time ensuring stability in the region. The January 29 agreement provides for coordinated security mechanisms between the parties without dissolving the fundamental administrative structures in Northeast Syria.

Şêxler, also known as Şiyûx, is located approximately 35 kilometers southwest of the city center of Kobane on the banks of the Euphrates. In the past week, joint checkpoints had been established there by the Asayish and troops of the Syrian transitional government. A joint security architecture has also been installed in the town of Çelebiyê, situated southeast of Kobane.
