Masrour Barzani and Mazloum Abdi discuss the current situation and regional tensions

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI), Masrour Barzani, held a telephone conversation on Monday with the Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Mazloum Abdi. According to the regional government, the exchange focused on the general situation in Southern Kurdistan as well as recent developments and tensions in the broader regional environment. Both sides emphasized the necessity of preserving security, peace, and stability in the KRI and throughout the region.

The conversation took place against the backdrop of the US-Israeli war of aggression against Iran. Since Saturday, the country has been subjected to aerial bombardment. The regime in Tehran and its proxies have in turn responded with counterattacks against Israel and US bases in regional states, including in Southern Kurdistan (Northern Iraq). Iran also recently targeted the bases of East Kurdistan opposition parties there.

Both the United States and Israel justify their attacks by citing “threats” posed by the Islamic Republic. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that it must not be allowed for the “murderous terrorist regime to arm itself with nuclear weapons that would enable it to threaten all of humanity.”

As recently as Friday, reports spoke of progress in nuclear talks between the United States and Iran. Tehran had assured in negotiations with the US that it would never possess nuclear material intended for the production of an atomic bomb, said Oman’s Foreign Minister Badr Albusaidi, who is mediating between the US and Iran. Such a “breakthrough,” he noted, had “never before been achieved.”
