In a statement on Sunday, the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) said the following:
At this critical and defining moment for our nation, the Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) affirms that a Syrian-owned political solution remains the sole viable path to ending the conflict. Our goal is the establishment of a democratic, pluralistic, and decentralized state—one that safeguards the unity of the country and guarantees the dignity of all its citizens without discrimination.
The rapid developments unfolding in Syria demand a conscious shift from merely managing the current reality to actively participating in the founding of a state based on citizenship and the rule of law. Such a state must be built upon an inclusive national charter that lays the groundwork for lasting stability, rooted in partnership and justice.
Fulfilling its national responsibility, the MSD declares its absolute rejection of any form of external interference in Syrian internal affairs. We firmly oppose seeking leverage from any regional or international party at the expense of our national sovereignty. Concurrently, we underscore the importance of fostering the best possible relations with all neighboring and regional states. This must be based on the principles of mutual respect, shared interests, and adherence to international law, thereby contributing to the desired regional security and stability.
The MSD reiterates its commitment to the success of the January 29th agreement, viewing it as a crucial step towards de-escalation and paving the way for a comprehensive political process. We affirm our readiness to engage positively with all initiatives that strengthen Syria’s unity and propel forward a sustainable political solution.
In this context, the MSD stresses the following:
1- The development of its organizational and political structure to align with the demands of this new phase. This involves adopting flexible and transparent working mechanisms that strengthen its national presence and contribute to rebuilding the state on modern, participatory foundations.
2- Active engagement in the formulation of a national charter founded on the unity of Syria, both land and people, and on the principles of equal citizenship and democratic decentralization. In this regard, it emphasizes:
– The constitutional recognition of the legitimate national rights of the Kurdish people.
– The protection of the cultural, linguistic, and national rights of all other Syrian components, including the Syriac, Assyrian, Turkmen, Armenian, and Circassian communities.
3- Ensuring the full and equal participation of women in political activities and decision-making processes. The MSD also emphasizes the importance of empowering young people and enabling their pivotal role in shaping Syria’s future by actively involving them at all stages of the political and social process.
4- Supporting the establishment of a unified, professional national military through an agreed-upon integration process. This includes preserving civil peace and adopting transitional justice as the framework for addressing the legacies of the past. This framework must encompass uncovering the truth, providing reparations, and consolidating societal reconciliation. It must also create the necessary conditions for a safe and dignified return of all displaced persons and refugees to their homes, thereby guaranteeing their rights and stability.
5- Launching a comprehensive Syrian national dialogue. Leveraging the MSD’s balanced relations with various political powers and societal components, this initiative aims to create a credible framework for a new Syria where there is no exclusion or marginalization. It calls for genuine participation from women, youth, and all active members of society.
6- Working urgently to improve the deteriorating living and service conditions of our people. This will be achieved by advancing relief efforts and reconstruction, supporting early recovery projects, and securing basic services. It also requires coordinating with all relevant parties to alleviate the daily suffering of citizens, especially given the difficult economic circumstances the country is undergoing.
The MSD, drawing upon its accumulated experience and its national role in preserving civil peace throughout the years of conflict, is today stepping forward, fully aware of its historic responsibility. It is committed to engaging positively in shaping the future of Syria, dedicating all its resources to serving a comprehensive national project. This project aims to build a modern, democratic Syrian state with an independent decision-making process, one that responds to the aspirations of its people for freedom, justice, and stability.
The future of Syria will be built through partnership among all its citizens, driven by a free national will and an inclusive political process. This path can end the suffering of Syrians and secure a future of dignity, justice, and lasting peace for generations to come.”
