At least eight detained during house raids in Van and Siirt

In the Kurdish provinces of Van and Siirt, Turkish police carried out multiple house raids early Tuesday morning. According to available information, at least eight people were detained, including a member of the youth council of the DEM Party. The reasons for the detentions remain unclear, and authorities have so far provided no official explanation.

In the province of Van, activists Abdullah Görkan, Ozan Dayan, and Hamdullah Kaya were detained following house raids carried out by the special operations units and taken to the provincial police headquarters.

On the other hand, serious allegations were reported during a police raid in the Edremit district of Van. According to reports, a unit of the Turkish anti-terror police stormed the home of DEM Party activist Lorin Aryen Turğut in the early morning hours. The door was reportedly forced open around 6 a.m., during which family members inside the house were pushed to the ground and beaten.

The activist herself was not at home at the time of the raid. Instead, her family members were threatened with detention and handcuffing. Particularly serious are claims that the activist’s brother, who was in a critical health condition following surgery, was repeatedly struck on the head with a weapon. The assault reportedly resulted in a head injury and a bone fracture.

Detentions were also reported in the province of Siirt. During the early morning raids, five people, including a minor, were taken into custody. The detainees are accused of having participated in demonstrations against the attacks on Rojava. They were taken to the provincial police headquarters. No further details regarding the allegations have been released so far.
