Australian Greens Party MP Abigail Boyd submitted a parliamentary question to the New South Wales State Parliament regarding the attacks against the Kurdish people in Rojava, crimes against humanity, and the siege of Kobanê.
Boyd, together with other Greens MPs, met with Kurds from Rojava and conveyed messages of solidarity.
The motion emphasized that the escalating violence against Kurdish civilians in Syria has caused deep concern within the Kurdish community in Australia.
The motion drew specific attention to the attacks on the Kurdish neighborhoods of Sheikh Maqsoud and Ashrafiyah in Aleppo in January, as well as the siege of Kobanê, which has been ongoing for weeks.
The Greens Party stated that basic services in the city have collapsed, with access to food, water, electricity, fuel, and medical supplies cut off.
According to humanitarian organizations, at least six children in Kobanê have died due to the cold, lack of medicine, and fuel shortages, while one infant died as a result of oxygen deprivation, it noted.
The motion noted that ceasefires are being used as a tactic to eliminate the political existence of the Kurds, highlighting the fact that Kurdish civilians are subjected to widespread violence, forced displacement, and arbitrary detention.
The Greens Party called on the Australian government to advocate for the establishment of an urgent protection mechanism under international supervision, to ensure uninterrupted humanitarian aid reaches besieged areas including Kobanê, to protect the political and human rights of Kurds in North and East Syria, and to increase humanitarian assistance for displaced civilians.
