SOHR: Concerns grow over potential massacres as Kobane is under complete siege

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the northern Syrian city of Kobane has experienced strict siege since yesterday in light of simultaneous attacks by factions affiliated to the transitional government on the city’s countryside, threatening a humanitarian disaster affecting tens of thousands of civilians.

SOHR noted that this critical escalation coincides with complete interruption of internet and telecommunication services, which increases concerns about potential massacres against civilians, contributes to media blackout, hinders documentation of violations and prevents civilians from delivering distress appeals to the international community.

“Local sources have confirmed that the humanitarian situations are rapidly deteriorating, amid acute shortage of food and medical supplies and ongoing interruption of electricity and water since the beginning of military battles. This coincides with growing panic among residents, specially women, children and elderly people regarding the ongoing bombardment and treats,” the observatory underlined.

SOHR stated that civilians in Kobane renew their distress appeals to relevant authorities, international organisations and guarantors to intervene immediately to stop the attacks, exert pressure on all parties to comply with the terms of ceasefire agreement and provide affective protection for civilians before it is too late.
