Christian communities in the canton of Cizîrê celebrated Christmas Day with festive church services. The masses were dedicated to peace, charity, and the coexistence of different social groups in the region.

Believers gathered in St. George’s Cathedral in the center of Hesekê early in the morning.

The liturgy included Bible readings, traditional Christmas carols, and the lighting of candles as a symbol of light, hope, and renewal. The church was festively decorated with an illuminated Christmas tree and nativity figures.

Prayers for peace and social cohesion
During the service held by Maurice Amsih, the Syrian Orthodox Church Archbishop in the Euphrates and Cizîrê region, special prayers were said for peace, security, and stability in Syria.

In his sermon, Amsih emphasized the importance of tolerance, interfaith cohesion, and peaceful coexistence among all ethnic and religious groups in northeastern Syria.

“The values of Christmas—love, compassion, and hope—are a bond that unites the people of this region,” said Archbishop Amsih. He concluded by calling for an end to violence and hatred. “May the message of Christmas pave the way for reconciliation and peace—here in our homeland and throughout the world.”

Autonomous Administration delegation also present
A delegation from the Democratic Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) also attended the service.

Among those present was Joseph Issa, deputy co-chair of the DAANES Executive Council. “The atmosphere of the ceremony was marked by contemplation and the desire for a better future,” he said.

The service ended with the lighting of candles and a solemn procession through the church.

The day passed peacefully, with the internal security forces in the autonomous region of northeastern Syria having taken comprehensive measures in advance to protect the church.
