Mazloum Abdi, Commander-in-Chief of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), spoke at a Consultative Council meeting organized in support of the Negotiation Committee established in North and East Syria. Abdi said that talks between the Autonomous Administration and the Damascus government were progressing.
Referring to military integration, Abdi stated that a common understanding has been reached between the parties in accordance with the public interest.
Noting that a lasting solution in Syria was directly linked to constitutional issues, Abdi stated: “It is clear that reaching a lasting solution covering all of Syria requires time and comprehensive negotiations on constitutional matters. We believe that the solution must be shaped on the basis of an inclusive and balanced governance model, away from overly centralized structures. The effective participation of all components that make up the country in the process is one of the fundamental pillars of the solution. A deeper and more constructive dialogue is needed to achieve a constitution that reflects the expectations of all segments.”
Abdi continued, “Progress is being made towards establishing a common vision on border crossings and border management. There is a clear understanding that natural resources are the common property of all Syrians, not just one side.”
The SDF Commander-in-Chief pointed out that consensus had been reached on many fundamental issues and expressed hope that agreement would also be reached on the remaining issues. He emphasized that the people of the region should govern their own areas within a constitutional framework, through democratic and legitimate mechanisms.
