Parliamentary commission extends its working period by two months

The parliamentary “Commission for National Solidarity, Brotherhood, and Democracy,” which is currently conducting a dialogue on peace and democratization in Turkey, met today for its 20th session. The joint report, which is to contain the commission’s concrete recommendations, will not be ready by the end of the year, according to today’s announcement. The commission’s scheduled working period has therefore been extended by two months.

The commission, chaired by Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş, had originally set a deadline of December 31 for its work. However, the unanimous decision to extend this deadline by two months was already considered a certainty, as the report on the expected legal steps could not be completed within this time frame.

In addition, Prof. Dr. Havva Kök Arslan and Murat Sevecen gave a presentation at today’s meeting on the analysis of the discussions held during the commission’s meetings. They addressed the similarities, differences, and necessities in the statements made by the commission members, while the members of parliament focused on the presentation and its requirements.

In addition to today’s meeting of the entire commission, the writing team has also scheduled another meeting for Thursday, December 25.

The commission’s goal is to present bipartisan recommendations for legislative measures in the context of the so-called peace and democratization process. Once completed, the report will be submitted to Parliament and converted into a legislative proposal.
