Residents being evicted from Someriye neighborhood

Security forces linked to the Syrian Interim Government requested the evacuation of homes in Someriye, where most of the population is Alawite, creating significant tension in the area. The neighborhood’s residents were reportedly given a 24-hour deadline.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR), an official named “Abu Huzeya” came to the neighborhood and marked several houses with green paint. These homes were slated for demolition and expected to be evacuated shortly thereafter. The news spread panic and unease among residents, and unrest ensued in the area in response.

Local residents stated that the measure was not coincidental, describing it as part of a planned pressure campaign aimed at forcibly displacing them. They also noted that these actions reflect a systematic policy intended to alter the demographic structure in areas inhabited by Alawites.

SOHR reported that armed groups affiliated with the Interim Government have been increasing pressure by establishing control over the neighborhood and restricting movement.

In recent weeks, these armed groups have tightened their control over the area: access in and out of the neighborhood has been strictly monitored, and residents’ movement has been heavily restricted.

Finally, the construction of a full isolation wall around the neighborhood has further escalated local anger and opposition.
