Delegation from Iraq and Kurdistan Region visits Tehran for official talks

According to the Iraqi media reports, a security delegation from Iraq and Kurdistan Region, led by Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji, has arrived in Tehran.

The security delegation, which includes Kurdistan Region Foreign Minister Rêber Ehmed and Kurdistan Region Security Department Head Hîwa Ehmed, is expected to discuss security and intelligence relations between Iran and Iraq, counterterrorism, the development of economic cooperation, and the interests of both countries with Iranian officials. According to reports, regional developments and border issues will also be discussed during the meeting.

The Iraqi and Kurdistan Region delegation will meet with Ali Larijani, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, and several Iranian officials.

In 2023, Iraq and Iran signed a joint security agreement. Under the agreement, a high-level joint security committee was established to address various issues such as security, borders, communication, and intelligence sharing. The committee includes the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kurdistan Region from the KDP (Kurdistan Democratic Party) and the Head of the Kurdistan Region Security Directorate from the PUK (Patriotic Union of Kurdistan).

The Council has met five times so far in Tehran and Baghdad. One of the decisions taken during these meetings was to relocate East Kurdish parties from the village of Zirguwêz in Sulaymaniyah to the Surdash Camp and from Hewlêr (Erbil) to the Sidekan Camp.

Iranian Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, visited Iraq on August 11, meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shia al-Sudani, Iraqi President Latif Rashid, Iraqi Parliament Speaker Mahmoud Meshedani, and Iraqi National Security Advisor Qasim al-Araji to discuss security issues.

During the talks, both countries agreed for their security delegations to hold regular meetings.
