The Mizan News Agency announced that Sultan Ali Shirzadi, who had been imprisoned for membership in the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran, was executed this morning. The stated reason was “spying in favor of Israel.”
In the country, where fair trials are widely reported to be absent and where confessions are allegedly obtained through torture and coercion, many political prisoners have been systematically executed under similar accusations.
According to figures released to the press, at least nine members of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran have been executed in Iran within the past month.
The Iran Human Rights (IHR), based in Norway, and the Paris-based Together Against the Death Penalty (ECPM) announced last Monday that Iranian authorities carried out at least 1,639 executions in 2025, the highest number recorded since 1989.
According to the report, this represents a 68% increase compared with 975 executions in 2024, and the total includes 48 women who were executed.
