An 8th-grade student carried out an armed attack at Ayser Çalık Secondary School in Maraş province on Wednesday. A teacher and three students lost their lives, while 20 others were injured.
Governor Mükerrem Ünlüer stated that the attacker, an 8th-grade student whose father is a former police officer, also died. “He fired at himself during the chaos. It is not yet clear whether it was suicide or whether he shot himself during the confusion. We believe he took his father’s weapons. He came with 5 firearms and 7 magazines and entered 2 classrooms,” he said.
According to the governor, the attacker opened fire indiscriminately with weapons he had brought in his backpack. Four of those injured are believed to be seriously wounded.
Justice Minister Akın Gürlek announced that an investigation has been launched into the incident, and three deputy chief prosecutors, six prosecutors, four civil inspectors, and four police inspectors have been assigned. While a broadcast ban has been imposed regarding the attack, Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin also headed to the area.
Today’s attack follows a similar incident in the Siverek district of Urfa on Tuesday, when at least 16 people were injured in a shooting at a vocational school, including four teachers, ten students, one police officer, and a school cafeteria worker. Five of the injured sustained more serious wounds and were transferred to a hospital in Urfa. The attacker was reported to be a 19-year-old former student.
