The Shengal Resistance Units (YBŞ) congratulated the Yazidi community on their New Year festival Çarşema Sor (Red Wednesday) and highlighted the special significance of the day. In a written statement, the YBŞ General Command described the festival as an expression of identity, resistance, and historical continuity.
Çarşema Sor, which falls on the first Wednesday of April according to the Yazidi calendar, is one of the most important religious holidays of the Yazidis. The YBŞ emphasized that the roots of this festival are “deeply embedded in history” and that it is not merely a tradition, but a living expression of a millennia-old faith.
Significance of the festival
In its statement, YBŞ particularly underlined the political and social significance of the festival. “This festival is living proof that a people whose existence was meant to be erased has preserved its identity and its existence,” the YBŞ stated. At the same time, it recalled the history of persecution that the Yazidi community has faced and continues to face. Despite repeated massacres and oppression, the people have defended their existence on their ancestral land and remained faithful to their belief, it added.
Commemoration of the martyrs
The YBŞ also combined their message with a commemoration of the martyrs. “We bow in respect before the greatness of our martyrs. Their resistance has contributed to the Yazidi community being able to preserve its identity and faith to this day,” the statement said.
In conclusion, the YBŞ extended their congratulations not only to Yazidis worldwide, but also to all forces striving for freedom and self-determination: “We congratulate our people and all freedom-loving individuals on Çarşema Sor.”
