Nizar Amedi officially takes office as the president of Iraq

In the vote held for the Iraqi presidency on Saturday, Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) candidate Nizar Amedi, who received the majority of votes in both the first and second rounds, became the new President of Iraq.

The Iraqi Presidency announced on Sunday that Nizar Amedi has taken over the presidential office from Latif Rashid.

After the handover ceremony at Al-Salam Palace in Baghdad, Nizar Amedi formally assumed his duties as President of Iraq, according to the statement.

Nizar Amedi has taken office as the sixth president following the liberation of Iraq from the Baath regime.

Background

Nizar Amedi was born in Duhok. He studied Engineering at Mosul University and lived and worked in Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad.

Amedi previously held several positions in Iraq. Among them, he served as Minister of Environment between 2022 and 2024. He also worked as an advisor to President Mam Jalal Talabani, Dr. Fuad Masum, and Dr. Barham Salih.

Nizar Amedi, a member of the PUK Political School, has 30 years of experience in government work and political life.

During Saturday’s election for the Iraqi presidency, contested by 18 candidates, 252 of the 329 members of parliament casted their votes.

PUK candidate Nizar Amedi received 208 votes in the first round and the majority of votes in the second, becoming the new President of Iraq.
