KDP says it doesn’t recognize Iraq’s new president

The Iraqi Parliament convened yesterday to elect the new president. In the second round of voting, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) candidate Nizar Amedî was elected President of Iraq by a majority of votes.

Following Nizar Amedî’s election as president, the Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) issued a written statement declaring that it does not accept Nizar Amedî as the representative of the majority of Kurds and that it will not hold talks with him.

According to the KDP, the election process for the Iraqi presidency was not conducted in accordance with the internal regulations of the Iraqi Parliament.
