Intersindical Solidària calls for the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan

Intersindical Solidària has conveyed to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe the need to guarantee the rights of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan and to facilitate his active participation in a peace process in the Middle East.

The trade union joined the campaign of letters to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. In a context of growing tension in the region, the organization highlighted Öcalan’s role as a key figure in advocating dialogue and de-escalation of the conflict, in contrast to the prevailing dynamics of military confrontation. Intersindical Solidària emphasized that, despite the limitations resulting from his imprisonment on the island of Imrali, the Kurdish leader has maintained a firm commitment to a political and democratic solution.

It also recalled that recent reports from the Council of Europe point to the need to comply with the rulings of the European Court of Human Rights, particularly with regard to the recognition of the “right to hope.” However, it regrets the lack of concrete measures taken by the Turkish government.

Intersindical Solidària further notes that Öcalan’s calls have contributed to significant movements toward the end of armed struggle and have received the support of hundreds of international organizations and prominent public figures.

For all these reasons, the organization demanded compliance with international law, the immediate improvement of detention conditions, and ultimately the freedom of Abdullah Öcalan so that he can participate without restrictions in the construction of a just and lasting peace in the region.
