The demonstration, organized under the leadership of the Human Rights Association (IHD), was attended by many civil society organizations.
Speaking during a statement made on Cumhuriyet Street, IHD Ağrı co-chair Azad Akbulut said that ill-treatment and unlawful practices occurred during operations targeting citizens who participated in Newroz.
Akbulut stated that detainees were subjected to humiliating treatment during custody and that their right to defense was violated. He added that pressure was applied through leading questions during interrogations.
Akbulut claimed that one citizen was referred for arrest simply for laughing and said that some individuals were targeted based on their names and identities. He argued that the arrests were carried out collectively and hastily without proper legal evaluation.
The statement said: “Facing the Dehaks with the spirit of Kawa, against the blind wells of Pharaoh with the hope of Joseph, against the fire of Zeus with the resistance of Prometheus, and against the oppression of tyrants with the courage of Kemal Kurkut, we will carry the torch of freedom, democracy, and peace, which is just and legitimate.”
After the press statement, the crowd held a march accompanied by slogans.
