Boz: The process must move to a concrete phase

Sümeyya Boz, a member of the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) and MP for Muş, said that the perspectives and warnings in Abdullah Öcalan’s latest statement on the “Democratic Society and Peace” process must be taken into account, emphasizing that the process should now move beyond declarations of intent and goodwill statements.

Boz said that Öcalan’s message shared during Newroz and the outcomes of the meeting held on March 27 should be evaluated together, noting that the two processes provide a complementary framework. She stated that the Newroz message presents a more historical and social perspective, while the delegation meeting points to concrete political solution methods.

Boz also underlined that the emphasis on the end of armed struggle signals the beginning of a new phase, adding that the process should move forward on the basis of democratic politics, dialogue, and negotiation. She stressed that this framework also offers a model in which different identities and beliefs can coexist.

Sümeyya Boz said that the process must advance in a phased and supervised manner and added that, while the steps taken so far are concrete, the initiation of the legal phase defined as the second stage represents a critical threshold. She stressed that issues such as expanding political participation, introducing sentence enforcement regulations, and increasing the powers of local administrations are key components of this process.

Boz also addressed the contacts carried out in parliament and said that a general consensus has emerged during meetings with political parties, the Speaker of Parliament, and relevant commissions on the need to initiate legal work. However, she warned that prolonging the process poses a serious risk. She said, “As the process drags on, expectations decline and new alternatives emerge. This means the weakening of the process,” adding that delays could negatively affect both the social and political foundations of the process.

Boz noted that public confidence in the process among Kurds has been maintained from March 8 to Newroz and April 4. She said that social support remains strong and that leftist, socialist, and opposition groups in Turkey have also expressed support for the process during Newroz events, creating an important social basis.

She emphasized the need to preserve this momentum and said: “We are at one of the strongest moments of this process. In order to maintain and advance this strength, legal steps must be taken as soon as possible.”
