Government forces open fire on civilians protesting the appointment of a mayor in Chalabiya, Kobane

In the town of Chalabiya near the city of Kobanê, dozens of residents gathered in front of the municipal building to protest the appointment of a mayor by the transitional government.

The local population stated that the appointment contradicts the agreement reached on January 29 between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Syrian transitional government, emphasizing that according to the agreement, each region should elect its own administrators and that local governance should be determined by the people.

General security forces affiliated with the transitional government intervened in the protest and attempted to disperse the citizens. According to reports from the ground, shots were fired during the intervention. It was not immediately clear if the crackdown resulted in injuries.

The residents who wanted to make a statement regarding the recent developments were obstructed by the armed groups who also prevented journalists from covering the incident.
