A program full of events has been prepared in Shengal to celebrate Abdullah Öcalan’s birthday on 4 April. The Yazidi Women’s Freedom Movement (TAJÊ), the Language and Education Institution, and the People’s Municipalities also led the events this year. Yazidi women drew attention to the impact of Öcalan’s philosophy on Yazidi women.
Emşê Korkorkî, co-chair of the Shengal People’s Assembly, stated that for 11 years, the Yazidi community and Yazidi women have been struggling on the basis of Öcalan’s thought and philosophy, saying: “Leader Apo [Abdullah Öcalan] wants women’s freedom and demands their rights. Leader Apo tries to save women from massacres, make their lives peaceful, and lead them to freedom. We, too, must demand Leader Apo’s freedom. His freedom is the freedom of all oppressed peoples. Leader Apo wants all oppressed peoples to liberate their own lands and societies. With Leader Apo’s philosophy, we too have liberated our land.”
Dîgurê Rihan Xidir, a member of TAJÊ, emphasized that after getting to know Öcalan’s philosophy, women’s freedom has further developed in Yazidi society, saying: “Women now speak in every field and can take part in all institutions. For this, we thank Leader Apo. In his speeches, Leader Apo expresses himself as a comrade of women. If women are free, then society is free. Because first they fragment the woman, then they fragment society. In the 2014 massacre, they also attacked women and sought to destroy society. We want Leader Apo to be released from prison. The leader’s wish was to come to Mount Shengal one day. Leader Apo’s fighters liberated Shengal, and in the same way, they liberated the oppressed woman. Yazidi women rose up with Leader Apo’s philosophy and were freed from male domination and their enemies.”
