The Antalya branches of the Human Rights Association (İHD), the Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD), and the Lawyers’ Association for Human Rights (ÖHD) drew attention to human rights violations and ongoing hunger strikes in high-security “well-type” prisons, calling for urgent action.
Speaking at a statement in front of the Antalya Courthouse, lawyer Ferdi Parim said that the harsh isolation conditions in these prisons seriously threaten both the physical and psychological health of the detainees.
Parim noted that the health conditions of Tahsin Sağaltıcı, Gürkan Türkoğlu, and Hüseyin Özen, who continue their hunger strikes at Antalya High-Security Prison, have crossed a critical threshold.
According to the statement, Tahsin Sağaltıcı, on hunger strike for 246 days, has fallen below 42 kilograms; Gürkan Türkoğlu is experiencing numbness and inflammations; and Hüseyin Özen, on hunger strike for 226 days, suffers from balance problems and nosebleeds. It was reported that all three prisoners can only move with wheelchairs due to severe weight loss.
Meanwhile, the İzmir branch of the Lawyers’ Association (ÇHD) also called for the closure of “well-type” prisons, emphasizing that these prisons impose isolation conditions that violate human dignity.
The organizations called on all relevant authorities, especially the Ministry of Justice, to take immediate responsibility against the life-threatening risks posed by the hunger strikes.
