Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok bombed

The residence of Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, in Duhok was targeted in a bombing on Saturday.

During a phone call with Barzani, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani condemned the attack.

According to a statement from Sudani’s media office, al-Sudani expressed his condemnation and rejection of the brutal attack on Mr. Barzani’s home in Duhok Governorate.

The Iraqi prime minister also ordered the formation of “a joint security and technical team from the relevant security agencies in the federal government and the regional government to investigate the incident, identify the perpetrators, and take all necessary legal measures against them.”

The statement added that President Barzani and Prime Minister Sudani also discussed “the latest developments in Iraq and the region, national security issues, and ways to ensure security and stability.”

Qubad Talabani, Deputy Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Region, also condemned the targeting of Nechirvan Barzani’s residence.

“Targeting Mr Nechirvan Barzani’s residence in Duhok represents a dangerous escalation, and we strongly condemn this incident,” Talabani said in a statement on his Facebook page.

“We also remind the federal government [Iraqi government] that outlawed armed groups have become a serious threat to the stability and security of both the Kurdistan Region and Iraq,” he added.

“If these perpetrators are not immediately stopped and brought to justice, there is a real risk that they will become an even greater threat to the property of officials and public institutions across other parts of Iraq in the future,” he warned.

According to reports from the ground, the cities of Hewlêr (Erbil) and Duhok in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq were targeted by six drone attacks today. According to initial reports, there were no casualties, while air defense systems reportedly intercepted some of the attacks. The first strike began in the morning hours, targeting Hewlêr.

Around half an hour later, a drone strike hit a residential area of Duhok city. According to footage shared by eyewitnesses on social media, a location near the city center was struck. Around midday, the city center was targeted once again, and shortly afterward, another drone crashed near the borders of Akre district in Duhok. Later in the afternoon, two additional attacks were carried out in the city.

Security forces continue to investigate the sites of the attacks, while no official statement has yet been made regarding the extent of the damage.

Since February 28, when Israel and the United States launched attacks on Iran, more than 460 drone and missile strikes have been carried out against the Kurdistan Region. These attacks have resulted in the death of 14 people and injury of 85 others.
