The Democratic Unity Initiative reaffirmed its support for the project “Yek netewe, yek çarenûs” (One nation, one destiny) and announced its active participation. The statement was made on Friday during a gathering in front of the Association for Social Peace and Dialogue (TOD-DER) building in Amed (tr. Diyarbakır), attended by numerous figures from politics and civil society.
The project has recently been launched by more than 200 intellectuals from Southern Kurdistan, aiming to promote broader understanding within Kurdish society.
Speaking on behalf of the Initiative, Secretariat member Hasan Özgüneş stated that developments in the Middle East have triggered a period of deep crises, while also opening new political opportunities. “Kurdistan stands at the center of these transformations. Previous historical opportunities were not sufficiently utilized,” he said.
In this context, Özgüneş stressed the need to be prepared for current developments. He emphasized that safeguarding and advancing the political achievements of the Kurdish people is only possible through unity. He also pointed to the calls for unity expressed during mobilizations for International Women’s Day and the Newroz celebrations.
“The developments in all parts of Kurdistan impose a historical responsibility on political parties, social forces, and individuals,” Özgüneş added. He described the national unity initiative launched in the Kurdistan Region of Iraq as an important and historic step, stating that his organization would actively support this process.
Co-spokesperson of the initiative, Mehmet Kamaç, also underlined the importance of Kurdish unity, noting that joint political action is essential in the face of ongoing wars in the Middle East.
