In multiple cities across Rojava, thousands marked this year’s Newroz festivities. While masses gathered in Kobanê, events in other locations had to be postponed due to storms and flooding.
Kobanê
Tens of thousands of people gathered at the central Newroz square in Kobanê. After a moment of silence for the martyrs, the Newroz fire was lit. At the beginning, Abdullah Öcalan’s message on Newroz was read.
Mizgîn Xelîl, Co-Chair of the Executive Council of the Autonomous Administration in Kobanê, emphasized in her speech that Newroz is not only a celebration but also an expression of ongoing resistance. Kurdish history, she noted, has been shaped by the struggle against oppression and is renewed on this day.
TEV-DEM representative Cahid Hesen highlighted the importance of unity. In light of current developments in the Middle East, he stressed the need for a common political perspective. He also called for the physical freedom of Abdullah Öcalan.
Speaking on behalf of the women’s movement Kongra Star, Xunav Xelîl stated that through Newroz, the Kurdish people make their existence, identity, and political will visible.
Dêrik and Girkê Legê
Celebrations in Dêrik and Girkê Legê were also accompanied by cultural programs, music, and dance. Numerous artists performed during the events, while participants engaged in traditional dances.

Amûdê
In Amûdê, the central Newroz celebration at Çaxirbazar Square was postponed due to heavt rainfall and adverse weather conditions. The organizing committee rescheduled the celebration for March 24. The Internal Security Forces (Asayish) organized a celebration in a sports hall in the city.
Dozens of members of the security structures, including units of the Community Defense Forces and the traffic organization, took part in the celebration. Many local residents also joined the event, often dressed in traditional Kurdish clothing. Despite weather-related limitations, Newroz in Amûdê was still celebrated collectively.
