The Amed (Diyarbakır) Newroz Organizing Committee made a statement regarding the Amed Newroz, which will be held this year under the slogan “Newroz of Freedom and Democracy (Turkish&Kurdish )” Speaking at the statement held at the Peoples’ Equality and Democracy Party (DEM Party) Amed Provincial Organization, DEM Party Amed Co-Chair Gülşen Özer said, “Newroz holds an important place in the history of Kurdish resistance. We invite all our people to the Newroz of freedom and peace.”
Ahmet Doğan, Co-Chair of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP) Amed Provincial Organization, stated, “From Kawa to Mazlum, Zekiye, Rahşan and Berivan, Newroz has been celebrated with enthusiasm. A heavy price has been paid for this. There is a state of war in the Middle East. The paradigm of Abdullah Öcalan holds an important place in preventing this war. Following the developments in Rojava, there have been attacks on Mr. Öcalan’s paradigm. Now, at the stage reached in Eastern Kurdistan (Rojhilat), everyone sees Mr. Öcalan’s paradigm as a way of liberation. This Newroz will be a Newroz of freedom for Mr. Öcalan. The demand of the Kurdish people, the demand of the peoples of the world, is the freedom of Mr. Öcalan. Since the day the declaration was announced, we have lit Newroz fires in many places. Our preparations for the great Newroz are in their final stage. We call on all our people to celebrate two holidays on the same day.”
Afterward, the Kurdish version of the statement by the Newroz Organizing Committee was read by Arzu Karaman from the Free Women’s Movement (TJA), and the Turkish version was read by Hasan Akengin, a member of the Association of Lawyers for Freedom (ÖHD).
The statement reads as follows:
“The peoples of the Middle East and the Kurds have been faced with a policy of denial and destruction for centuries. These lands, which international hegemonic powers seek to shape in line with their own interests and benefits, are witnessing war and destruction every day. These attacks, which target a life where peoples live together in equality and freedom, cost the lives of hundreds of people every day.
The area where these attacks have appeared most persistently has been Rojava. The people of Rojava have created their own gains and have protected them with great determination. Despite all regional calculations, the people of Rojava have achieved significant gains. Undoubtedly, the only force that has made these gains possible is the dynamism created by organized popular resistance. What needs to be done today is to protect and further expand these gains with the spirit of national unity.
While these developments are taking place at the regional level, a historic process is also continuing in Turkey. The Peace and Democratic Society Process, initiated by Kurdish People’s Leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025, has today made significant progress and reached certain stages. What is critical for us is to develop a line of struggle that will facilitate this historic responsibility undertaken by Mr. Öcalan. While carrying out this struggle on the one hand, it is also our duty to ensure a ground where Mr. Öcalan can work under free conditions and manage the process. Improving the conditions of Mr. Öcalan, who is the chief negotiator of the democratic transformation process, is an indispensable demand for both us and the peoples. In addition, implementing without delay the legal regulations stated in the parliamentary report that sets out the requirements of the process is extremely important to prevent any disruption.
In light of all these developments, we are preparing for the Newroz of 2026. So far, in many localities, peoples have welcomed the spring and united around the Newroz fire. We are already experiencing the enthusiasm and excitement of the Newroz that we will hold in Amed on March 21 with the participation of millions. We know that, as every year, millions of people will fill the squares and will greet Mr. Öcalan with the warmth of the Newroz fire.
At the same time, we believe that we will turn this Newroz into a common spring of the Kurdish people. In all four parts of Kurdistan, we will celebrate Newroz with the spirit and consciousness of national unity. The four parts of Kurdistan will unite in Newroz celebrations. Because Newroz is the intensification of the fire of freedom against those who impose slavery. The Kurdish people, whose identity, existence and culture were denied for years in all four parts of Kurdistan, came together around the Newroz fire and have reached today by expanding their social resistance.
We invite all peoples, especially women and youth, to take the front lines and grow the freedom dance at the Newroz we will hold this year in Amed. With the spirit of the democratic nation and unity, we call for expanding the free life of the Kurdish people. We invite all our people who raise the voice of equality and freedom to meet at the Amed Newroz ground and to expand the struggle for unity, freedom, democracy and equality.”
