A commemoration was held in Nicosia for the Greek Cypriot journalist and activist Theofilos Georgiadis, who was murdered on 20 March 1994 on the orders of the Turkish state. The remembrance event, marking the approaching anniversary of the death of the chairman of the Cypriot Solidarity Committee for Kurdistan, began in the morning with a religious ceremony in a church attended by state representatives.
Afterward, an official memorial ceremony took place in front of Georgiadis’ home, where he was shot at the time. In addition to the Georgiadis family, several ministers, members of the European Parliament, representatives of political parties, and civil society organizations attended the event. Representatives of the army and police were also present, as well as members of the Kurdish cultural center in Cyprus named after Georgiadis and delegates of the Democratic Union Party (PYD) from Western Kurdistan.

During the official ceremony, representatives of various institutions and organizations laid wreaths at the monument erected at the site where Georgiadis was murdered on the night before Newroz. Participants honored the “friend of the Kurdish people,” as he is affectionately called by the Kurds, with a moment of silence.
In speeches delivered at the ceremony, Georgiadis was praised as an important figure in the solidarity between the Cypriot and Kurdish peoples. Kurdish politicians emphasized that he played a key role in strengthening relations and mutual support between the two societies. It was also recalled that Abdullah Öcalan had described Georgiadis as “our great martyr” and highlighted his role in connecting the two peoples.
