TJA: Death of Dilan Karaman not an isolated incident

The Free Women’s Movement (TJA) released a written statement regarding Dilan Karaman, who lost her life under suspicious circumstances in Amed.

The statement noted that lawyers from TJA have closely followed the investigation process since the first day Karaman was hospitalized. TJA stated that the legal struggle will continue so that Mazlum Toprak, who is said to be the perpetrator of the violence, receives the heaviest possible punishment.

The statement said that research and testimonies reveal that Dilan Karaman’s death is not an isolated incident, but must be evaluated within a cycle of violence created by male violence, gendered social roles, systematic pressure, and institutional negligence.

TJA also stated that they will continue to follow the process in order to reveal all dimensions of the violence Karaman was subjected to and to ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The statement emphasized that this loss will be turned into a collective responsibility and struggle. It stated the following:

That the judiciary must conduct an effective investigation against the perpetrator, Mazlum Toprak, and that he be arrested and receive the heaviest possible punishment.

That legal accountability be demanded for the failure of the state’s Ministry of Health and its personnel to fulfill their responsibilities following the suicide. In line with the principles we have never compromised throughout our history of struggle, we will continue to follow the process so that the political party and the member of parliament she worked with, Saliha Aydeniz, who are the primary parties responsible for the mobbing Dilan was subjected to, are referred to the relevant party disciplinary boards and that the necessary sanctions are applied.

We also emphasize that we will struggle against all narratives that blame Dilan and target her memory and the legacy of struggle she left behind, which aim to render invisible the real parties responsible for Dilan’s death.
