From the heart of the frontlines of resistance, a fighter of the Women’s Protection Units (YPJ), Avashin Basya, extended special greetings to all women in Rojava and around the world on the occasion of March 8, International Women’s Day, emphasizing that this day represents the day of women who resist for freedom and dignity.
In her statement, Avashin Basya noted that the YPJ was among the leading forces that confronted the terrorist organization Islamic State. She stated that “women fighters within the ranks of the YPJ played a fundamental role in breaking ISIS and ending its darkness, tearing apart the black veil it attempted to impose to suffocate women’s lives and freedom.”
Avashin Basya added: “On March 8, we congratulate Leader Apo (Abdullah Öcalan) and salute the martyrs—women and men—, because thanks to their sacrifices, we stand here today, raising the banner of freedom high. Their blood illuminated the path of resistance and made women a symbol of strength and determination.”
The YPJ fighter affirmed that they will remain faithful to the pledge they made before to the martyrs, stating: “As the Women’s Protection Units, we will always remain committed to our responsibilities—on the frontlines and in every arena of struggle. We will continue defending our people and the rights of all women until a free and democratic society based on equality and justice is achieved.”
Avashin Basya concluded her message by saluting every woman who resists, every mother of a martyr, and everyone who carries the ideals of freedom, affirming that March 8 will remain a day to renew the pledge to continue the path of resistance until the end.
