The government of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq (KRI) has rejected reports claiming that it is arming Kurdish opposition groups and sending them to Iran. Government spokesperson Peshawa Hewramani said on Thursday that the allegations are unfounded and are being deliberately spread.
In a statement, Hewramani rejected claims that the Kurdistan Region is part of a plan to arm Kurdish opposition parties and send them onto Iranian territory. “The reports claiming that the Kurdistan Region is involved in such a plan are completely false. We strongly reject these accusations,” he said.
The spokesperson also stressed that neither the government of the Kurdistan Region nor political parties in the region are involved in escalating tensions. “Instead, the Kurdistan Region advocates for stability and the de-escalation of conflicts in the Middle East. On the contrary, we call for peace and stability in the region,” Hewramani said.
At the same time, the government spokesperson strongly condemned repeated attacks on the Kurdistan Region, describing them as “cowardly attacks.” He called on the Iraqi central government and the international community to take measures to stop these attacks and to ensure the security of the Kurdistan Region and its population.
Kurdish parties deny reports of alleged ground offensive
The statement comes amid rising tensions in the Middle East following the US-Israeli war against Iran, the effects of which are increasingly impacting Iraq and the Kurdistan Region. Earlier, several parties from East Kurdistan had rejected reports in international media about an alleged ground offensive against the Iranian regime. Representatives of parties such as PJAK, PDKI, and Komala stated that the reports do not correspond to reality.
