İmralı Delegation: Talks on legislation for the process to begin after the Eid

DEM Party İmralı Delegation members Pervin Buldan and Mithat Sancar met with Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi and Justice Minister Akın Gürlek in Ankara on Wednesday within the framework of the Peace and Democratic Society Process.

The delegation made a public statement after the meetings which focused on issues of the rule of law, local self-government, and possible legislative amendments within the framework of the peace and democratic society process.

‘We held two very important meetings’

Pervin Buldan said they conducted “two very important meetings” and stated: “We conveyed to Justice Minister Gürlek, who has undertaken a crucial role regarding the issue of trust in the judiciary, that we have high expectations during his term. We want to express this publicly as well. We hope this will mark a new beginning, a renewal of trust for the Ministry of Justice, to which society most frequently turns. He assumed office at a time when Constitutional Court (AYM) rulings and European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) decisions have not been implemented. Society has high expectations in this regard.”

Legislative talks at the Justice Commission after the Eid

Buldan continued: “We conveyed our view that the draft law should be brought to the Justice Commission in order for this matter to be finalized. They stated that preparations in this direction are already underway. Most likely, legislative discussions will begin at the Justice Commission immediately after Eid al-Fitr (20–22 February). After deliberations in the Commission, the draft will be submittedto the General Assembly of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).”

Positive and productive meeting with the Interior Minister

Pervin Buldan further stated: “Likewise, there is significant public expectation from Interior Minister Mustafa Çiftçi regarding the issue of trustees. We discussed these matters openly with both ministers. We shared our views and thoughts with them and conveyed the expectations of society. We clearly expressed our positions on the trustee issue, the problems experienced in prisons, and the non-implementation of ECtHR and AYM rulings. I would like to emphasize that it was a very positive and productive meeting. We gained the impression that they will fulfill their responsibilities in the best possible way during this period.”

The foundation and objective of the process is peace

Delegation member Mithat Sancar also stressed that they held “two important meetings” with the ministers and said, “We conducted these visits both to wish them well in their new posts and to convey the current expectations of society regarding the rule of law, justice, and democracy.”

Sancar continued: “As you know, the foundation and objective of the process is peace. And the condition for peace is justice. Lasting peace requires justice that encompasses all segments of society without discrimination. The Ministry of Justice assumes an important function both during the preparatory phase and in the implementation phase after laws are passed by Parliament. We have conveyed both to the public and to the ministers how urgent these needs are.”
