The “Peace and Democratic Society” process launched by Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan on February 27, 2025, has left a year behind. Speaking to ANF, residents of the Martyr Rüstem Cudi Refugee Camp in Maxmur in northern Iraq called on the Kurdish people and tribes to unite.
Referring to Öcalan’s “Call for Peace and Democratic Society,” Maxmur resident Fadile Pîranî said: “For 27 years, the Leader has been resisting under severe isolation. It is impossible to describe the effort he has devoted to this process in hours, days, or years. As the Kurdish people, we have supported the process initiated by the Leader. Likewise, the Kurdish Freedom Movement has taken concrete steps; under the leadership of Besê Hozat, a guerrilla group burned their weapons. While the Leader and the Movement have done what was necessary, the state has taken no concrete steps. Many people remain in prison and are not released even after completing their sentences. Although a resolution process has been initiated, the Turkish state continues its threats against the Kurdish people, mainly against Rojava, Shengal, and Maxmur. We have no trust in the Turkish state.”
Fadile Pîranî drew attention to the parliamentary report and stated: “A report was submitted to parliament, but it does not contain a sincere approach. Despite the talks and the process, no changes have been made to our Leader’s conditions. The Turkish state has done nothing beyond threats and special warfare policies. It can be said that the process has been halted by the state. We call upon all Kurdish people to unite. If unity is not achieved, the process will fail. The Turkish state must take a step. We do not want bloodshed. Problems cannot be resolved through war but through dialogue. We will support the process initiated by the Leader until the end. We do not want it to be undermined.”
Another resident, Hese Hilalî, said: “As is known, our Leader took a step toward the Turkish state and the world. One year has passed, and our Leader has done whatever was required to ensure the continuation of the process. A call was made by our Leader for the PKK to dissolve itself, and in line with this call, the PKK dissolved itself. Similarly, a call was made for the withdrawal of forces from Bakur, and the withdrawal took place. Under the leadership of Besê Hozat, weapons were burned. Weapons were burned in this way for the first time in world history. Many steps were taken, but unfortunately no steps were taken by the state and its partners. Let everyone know that every word of the Leader is an instruction for us. I call on all Kurdish people to unite; if we do not unite, they will eliminate us one by one, just as they did in past struggles. We also appeal to all Kurdish leaders and tribes: unite with your own forces, your organizations, and your Leader.”
