On Friday, families of detainees, together with residents of Qamishlo, assembled to call for the release of their relatives who were imprisoned during the Syrian regime’s offensive against the Autonomous Administration in Rojava. In a statement, they demanded the immediate implementation of an agreement announced within the framework of the accord between the SDF and the authorities in Damascus.
“Our hearts are full of pain, but hope lives on”
The statement was read in Kurdish by teacher Rojîn Mûsa and in Arabic by Ferîd Hesen. Addressing the Kurdish public and supporters worldwide, the families declared: “We direct this appeal to you with hearts full of pain but with unbroken hope. Our sons, fathers, and brothers — the prisoners from Rojava — remain in Syrian custody, although their release was announced following talks with the Syrian transitional government and the SDF.”
For a month now, the agreement has not been implemented, the statement continued. There is no reliable information about the fate of the prisoners. Their families have received no details regarding their health conditions or the circumstances of their detention.
Appeal to conscience and the public
The relatives stated that mothers, fathers, spouses, and children are living in deep anxiety, waiting every day for the return of their loved ones. They called on “the conscience of humanity” and on human rights defenders to stand by the prisoners and increase pressure for their release. At the same time, they urged the responsible authorities in Damascus to implement the agreements and release the detainees without delay.
Call for peaceful mass actions
In conclusion, the families appealed to Kurds in all four parts of Kurdistan and in the diaspora to demonstrate their solidarity through peaceful and mass actions. “The voices of the prisoners and their families must be made heard everywhere,” the statement said.
