U.S. Representative discusses the “Constitution” and the “New Government” in Baghdad

Faik Zeydan, President of the Iraqi High Judicial Council, met with Tom Barrack, the U.S. Special Representative. During the meeting in Baghdad, the process of forming a new government and the constitutional requirements were discussed.

According to a statement from the press office of the Iraqi High Judicial Council, the parties evaluated the constitutional procedures to be followed in the formation of the government and the role of the judiciary in implementing this process.

The meeting took place at a time when political tensions continue in Iraq and the public expects the judiciary to assume an active role in resolving constitutional issues.

Meanwhile, according to reports in some media outlets, Tom Barrack conveyed during the meeting that if Nuri al-Maliki does not withdraw his candidacy for prime minister, the United States may impose sanctions on certain Iraqi individuals and institutions at the beginning of next week.

Last month, U.S. President Donald Trump stated that Washington would cut its support to Iraq if Maliki were to become prime minister. However, the Coordination Framework, the largest Shiite bloc in parliament, continues to insist on Maliki’s candidacy despite U.S. pressure.
