The Syrian Democratic Council (MSD) welcomes the release and exchange of detainees that took place in Suwayda Governorate. According to reliable information, the process resulted in the release of 86 detainees under the supervision of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Among them were 61 civilians who returned to Suwayda and 25 who returned to Damascus. In exchange, approximately 30 members of the Syrian government forces who had been held by local groups were released.
“This step represents a practical indication that humanitarian progress is possible despite the complexity of the Syrian context. It demonstrates that sensitive and long-standing issues, particularly those related to detainees and prisoners, can be addressed through constructive measures. The MSD considers this development a meaningful opportunity to reduce tensions and to advance confidence-building efforts,” said the Syrian Democratic Council.
The MSD also stresses that this achievement should not remain an isolated event. It should be built upon and expanded across all Syrian territories, stating: “This is particularly important in the context of relations between the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) and the Interim Government. Clear and transparent mechanisms must be established to ensure the continuity of reciprocal release processes. Such mechanisms should prevent selectivity and avoid political exploitation.”
Accordingly, the MSD calls for the issue of prisoners and detainees to be treated as an urgent national priority, urging the launch of a comprehensive and organized exchange process across all Syrian regions: “This would contribute to reducing divisions among Syrians and restoring national cohesion. It would also support a constructive process that strengthens civil peace and lays the foundation for a new phase of understanding and national partnership.”
