Human rights activists from Europe travel to Rojava

On 22 February 2026, a group of human rights activists from European countries arrived in Rojava.

The group, whose visit was facilitated by the Foreign Relations Department of the Democratic Autonomous Administration, will hold talks with legal and human rights institutions concerning violations taking place in Syria and will subsequently prepare a report. The delegation met with the Cizîr Social Justice Council.

One of the group’s members, former Icelandic Minister of Justice Ögmundur Jonasson, made a statement about the purpose of their visit to Rojava.

Jonasson stated that they wanted to observe and investigate the events and violations occurring in Rojava and the wider region, saying: “Our group includes many medical and legal experts. The violations taking place in Rojava have drawn my attention. It is important for me to see what kind of situation people are going through. Fundamentally, however, we came for humanitarian purposes. Now we will undertake a mission, conduct research, and see things for ourselves.”

Jonasson noted that they would meet with individuals, witnesses to events, and institutions, adding: “We have just held a meeting, listened to justice institutions, and obtained legal information. During the meeting, we better understood the contradictions of the transitional government in Damascus. On the one hand, an integration process has been initiated. On the other hand, there are major challenges in terms of justice. On the one hand, we speak of integration; on the other, the siege of Kobane continues. We came to obtain information.”

Jonasson stated that following their meetings and investigations, they would prepare a report and share it with the relevant institutions and parties.
