The Foreign Minister of the occupying Turkish state, Hakan Fidan, recently threatened the Yazidis in Shengal and called on Iraq to intervene against Yazidi forces. Although the Iraqi government verbally rejected Fidan’s statements, its recent actions in Shengal have increased doubts and concerns.
According to Rojnews, at around 15:00 today, the Iraqi army sent excavators and bulldozers to establish new military positions in the Şehit Gênco area, where a joint checkpoint of the Federal Police and the Ezidhan (Yazidi land) Asayish (Internal Security Forces) is located, without coordinating with the Ezidhan Asayish.
The Şehit Gênco area was established in 2017 and has long been jointly administered without issue by the Ezidhan Asayish and the Federal Police since.
On February 20, the Shengal Autonomous Administration issued a written statement calling on the Iraqi state to resolve the Shengal issue not through military means but within a constitutional framework and through dialogue.
It also demanded that all defense forces and administrative activities in Shengal be taken over and formalized within the framework of Iraqi law.
However, at a time when solution efforts and diplomatic negotiations are on the agenda, the Iraqi army’s initiative—one that could lead to conflict—continues.
