The European Kurdish Women’s Movement (TJK-E) and the European Kurdistan Democratic Societies Congress (KCDK-E) issued a statement titled, “Kurdistan’s Newroz is the Newroz of Unity and Freedom.”
In their statement, TJK-E and KCDK-E said: “Dear and resilient people, all political forces and representatives of the Kurdish people in the diaspora,
As has been the case for over a century, once again we face our national holiday, Newroz, under the shadow of heavy costs, suffering, and attacks. As we learned from the fire lit by the blacksmith Kawa and the spirit of resistance of his contemporary followers, Newroz is not only the arrival of spring.
Newroz is the name of rebellion against oppression, of light against darkness, of freedom against submission.
We welcome this Newroz as a new march of resurrection and hope towards freedom, unity, and a democratic social life led by women.”
The statement added: “In response to the attacks on Rojava, the Kurdish people have sent a clear message to their political forces in every sphere: The Kurds are one, and their homeland is Kurdistan. We also see this call of our people as a historical responsibility and an explicit mandate.
Today, our choice is clear:
National unity instead of fragmentation,
Common struggle instead of competition and narrow interests,
Women’s freedom instead of patriarchal mentality,
A just life where women’s labor and social labor are valued instead of exploitation,
An ecological society instead of the plundering of nature,
A democratic nation perspective instead of mono-cultural and denialist ideologies.”
The statement continued: “Let’s make Newroz 2026 the beginning of strengthening the unity of the Kurdish people, placing women’s freedom at the foundation of social life, and reinforcing the consciousness of a democratic nation.
History has shown us that the Kurdish people have always responded to decrees, massacres, and denialist policies with solidarity and unity. What we need today more than ever is the determination to protect our solidarity and national-democratic values. We may have different opinions. Our political approaches may vary. But the expectation of our people is clear: Political forces, leaders, and opinion leaders must be pioneers of unity.”
The statement underlined that “the Newroz Fire” should be turned “into the light of:
Women’s freedom,
The equal and free unity of peoples,
Ecological life,
And the democratic nation.
Through democratic, peaceful, and egalitarian joint struggle, we can protect both our national existence and our social values.”
